WHAT is Travel
Health Insurance?

Global protection when health emergencies can't wait

travel insurance icon

International travel medical insurance protects you during health emergencies abroad. Your regular insurance stops at the border, leaving you vulnerable overseas.

Foreign hospitals demand payment before treatment. Without coverage, you pay all costs from $5,000 for minor injuries to $100,000+ for evacuation.

Our two plans (USAway for Americans traveling internationally and International Major Medical for visitors to the USA) provide emergency care, hospitalization, and evacuation benefits tailored to your journey.

WHO is Travel Health
Insurance for?

Coverage for global adventurers and visitors alike

Our Travel Health Insurance plans serve two key groups: US citizens traveling internationally and foreign nationals visiting the United States.

Students abroad, business travelers, tourists, and immigrants all need protection during their journeys. We provide essential medical coverage in places your regular insurance simply doesn’t work.

Many travelers don’t realize their domestic health plans offer limited or no coverage across borders. Our specialized international plans fill this critical gap, protecting you from potentially devastating medical expenses.

WHEN Does Travel Health
Insurance Pay Out?

Financial protection when medical emergencies strike abroad

Travel health insurance activates when you face unexpected medical situations abroad.

Unlike standard health insurance, these specialized plans respond specifically to medical emergencies that happen outside your home country. They don’t cover routine care, preventative services, or pre-existing conditions.

Reimbursement typically occurs in one of two ways: direct payment to the foreign medical facility, or reimbursement to you after you submit documentation of expenses.

Travel Health Insurance Questions

The USAway plan covers US citizens traveling outside the United States. The International Major Medical plan covers non-US citizens visiting or immigrating to the United States. Both provide emergency medical coverage, but they’re designed for travelers going in opposite directions across US borders.
Most US health insurance plans provide limited or no coverage outside the United States. Medicare doesn’t cover foreign medical care at all. Even plans that offer some international coverage typically have high out-of-pocket costs and exclude medical evacuation, which can cost $50,000-$100,000 if needed.
Coverage begins on your policy effective date, which is typically the day you cross an international border after purchasing the policy. There’s no waiting period for emergency medical benefits – you’re covered from day one of your trip for new, unexpected medical issues that arise during travel.

These plans cover emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, emergency room visits, surgical procedures, ambulance services, prescription medications needed for treatment, and medical evacuation if necessary. Coverage limits vary by plan, with options from $50,000 to $5 million for USAway and up to $1 million for International Major Medical.

Pre-existing conditions are typically not covered. These plans are designed for sudden, unexpected illnesses or injuries that occur during your trip, not ongoing medical conditions. Some plans offer limited coverage for acute episodes of pre-existing conditions, but this varies by policy and usually requires a separate rider.
Both plans provide access to networks of pre-screened, English-speaking providers worldwide. When you purchase a policy, you’ll receive contact information for 24/7 assistance services that can help locate appropriate medical facilities in your travel destination. In emergencies, you can go to any medical facility.
If local medical facilities can’t adequately treat your condition, these plans cover medical evacuation to the nearest appropriate facility. For USAway members, this may mean transport back to the United States if medically necessary. The plans coordinate all evacuation logistics and cover approved transportation costs up to your policy limit.
Keep all documentation from any medical treatment received during your trip. Contact the claims department using the number on your policy card as soon as possible. You’ll need to submit a completed claim form along with itemized bills and payment receipts. Claims processing typically takes 30-45 days after all required documentation is received.
